Health Benefits Of Coffee

There are lots of studies that dal with the health benefits of coffee. Some say coffee is bad, others, and it seems this is the growing belief now, show that coffee may actually be beneficial to your health. I have to stress that this does not exclude the cream and sugar, which are bad for you.
Here’s a few of the health benefits of coffee:

It may be good for your liver

Quite a few studies have shown that caffeine helps the liver regulate itself. This is a great benefit for heavy drinkers. But then again, I don’t think anyone reading about the alkaline lifestyle is a heavy drinker. So this might not be the main benefit for my readers …

Coffee may help you lose weight

I won’t go in detail about this here. I’m not sure I believe it (and it actually relates to green coffee). Anyone who has read any of my posts will know that I have a completely different philosophy on weight loss.
Coffee could help with appetite suppression – but I’ve never noticed this. Have you noticed you get less hungry when you drink coffee?

Coffee could help fight bad moods and depression

Coffee makes you happy apparently. A study (from the National Institutes of Health and the AARP) discovered that coffee drinkers (defined as people who drink more than 4 cups a day) were 10 % less likely to be depressed than non coffee drinkers.
Shockingly, a Harvard study revealed that drinking 2 to 4 cups a day reduced the suicide risk by 50 %.
That’s a great reason to start drinking coffee again. In fact I’m feeling a little blue today, but I’ve already had a cup this morning. Three more to go and I should be feeling happier ;)

Boost performance

Coffee (by that they refer to caffeine) “has been proven to increase the number of fatty acids circulating in the bloodstream,” reports The New York Times, “which enables people to run or pedal longer.”
Everyone knows that drinking coffee gives you a boost, but take care, if you artificially boost your energy, there is bound to be an equally large drop in energy when the caffeine wears off.

Coffee may lower risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s

Studies have shown that coffee could help keep your mind sharp and reduce your risk of dementia.

Smelling coffee could make you less stressed.

I recently read in the Huffington Post that researchers at the Seoul National University examined the brains of rats who were stressed with sleep deprivation and discovered that those who were exposed to coffee aromas experienced changes in brain proteins tied to that stress.
But then again we’re not rats – but I have to say, I do love the smell of fresh coffee.

Coffee may make you smarter

This is the reason I used to drink coffee when I was studying. Studies have shown that coffee can temporarily boost cognition. Unfortunately, I’ve never felt smarter after drinking my coffee (maybe I put in too much milk?). :)

So, Is Coffee Healthy?

There are certainly many health benefits of coffee. On top of that, many of the health benefits of coffee are well documented in research papers.
I’m undecided. I will continue drinking coffee in moderation because I really like it. When I drink coffee, I do tend to ensure that I hydrate. So drink plenty of water before and after your coffee to ensure you remain alkaline.
Let me know whether you drink coffee, and why (or why not)!
